“The Big Blue”
Amorgos, having as a capital the city of Amorgos, is located at the southeast end of Cyclades. With an image such as the imposing Venetian Castle surrounded by the traditional white houses, sandy beaches and a crystal clear sea, it is not hard to see why this island was selected for the shooting of the film “The Big Blue”……
How to get to Amorgos:
Those of you who decide to visit Amorgos and the Little Cyclades won’t have any problems at all concerning transportation since boats leave for the islands quite of ten.
Boats leave both from Pereus and Rafina Ports.
The trip on conventional boats lasts 7 to 9 hours depending on the in-between stops they have, and 4 to 5 hrs on high speed boats.
During winter the boats make the trip to Amorgos 3 to 4 times a week while in the summer they do it 5 to 8 times.
There are frequent departures from Amorgos to the rest of the Cyclades as well as to the Dodecanese once a week, with the exception of Astypalaia where it is twice a week.
“SKOPELITIS EXPRESS” starting from the port of Katapola connects Amorgos to the Little Cyclades on a daily basis.

Nightlife infoIf your main interest in partying this is definitely not the place to go. Nevertheless, there are bars and discos, just like anywhere else in Greece. In Chora, Katapola, Egialia and Chilokeratidi there are nice places to spend warm summer evenings in with a cold drink. Even if you already have seen The Big Blue, you shouldn't miss watching it here: in Katapola there is a bar that shows the film every night.
Culture and history infoIf you prefer a more historical location, Amorgos will not disappoint you. Visit the archaeological area Minoa at Katapola, the monastery “Holy Mary Hozoviotissa” which was founded in 1088 by Alexius Comnenus and experience the many local customs and traditions. Due to the fact that it is across Ion towns (Efessos, Alikarnassos, Militos) made it the first station of Ion tribes that went to Cyclades islands. The remains of three ancient towns, Arsenis, Aegialis and Minoan show the island's history. Like all Cyclades islands suffered a lot from Venetians, Turkish and pirates. Despite all these the island managed to keep its identity and culture. That is something you can see in the architecture of Chora (town), villages and in the way that people live. Friendly and cordial, they welcome you in their island and do their best to make your holidays unforgettable. Must to go: On Ayia Anna beach, where the film “Big Blue” was shot, you will find two amazing bays, one of which is home to the church of Ayia Anna. The beach is pebbly, with rocks and caves, crystalline waters and is ideal for snorkelling! Highlight: while you are swimming, enjoy the stunning view of the Monastery of the Virgin Mary Hozoviοtissa carved into the steepest rock of Mt. Profitis Elias! Amorgos has natural beauties, historic-archaeological interest, religious monuments, options for pleasure and walking routes. That is why it attracts thousands of visitors every year. Still not convinced? Visit Amorgos and enjoy your summer holidays!
