Aegina, the “eyesore of gulf” (by Aristotle) , as it is visible from the Acropolis of Athens, was the first capital of Greece. In Aegina you will find historical sights bearing witness to its long past, as well as splendid beaches, clear sea and a traditional infrastructure. Aegina is also ideal for relaxing weekends, with the opportunity for great excursions. Aegina has sandy beaches, with clean and cool water and all the facilities that will make your life easy and exciting. It has hundreds of fish taverns with fresh fish, is famous for its pistachios that are produced on the island and bear its name (Aegina pistachios), for the Monastery of Agios Nektarios as well as the temple of Aphaea. Places to visit: are the small port town of Agia Marina, the very small town of Perdika and the Archaeological Musem.

Aegina is a very lively island, very hospitable and has many things to offer to the tourists who visit the island. Most importantly, one can combine all these within a single day and one never gets bored if he stays longer.

On the contrary!  Upon leaving, don’t forget to take with you some pistachios.

Culture and history info

Aegina has been the pole of attraction for travelers in search of adventure and discovery throughout history. Nowadays it continues to impress. The town of Aegina served as the seat of the first government of the Modern Greek State in early 19th century. There are many interesting sites from ancient & byzantine times on the island. Nowadays, Aegina is considered an artistic centre as many painters and sculptors live on the island. Aegina is also famous for its ceramics and its “Aegina pistachios” (an EU Protected Designation of Origin product). You will find signs of that everywhere: - The town of Aegina; some of the major stops will be at the old Government Building, the old Orphanage House, the Museum of Folklore Art, the ruins of the Doric temple of Apollo (Kolona) and the Archaeological Museum of Aegina. - The Temple of Aphaia Athena, one of the best preserved temples in Greece, built in the 5th century BC just after the naval battle of the nearby island of Salamina; - The Venetian tower Pyrgos Markellou, located near the cathedral - a sight in itself - Agios Nikolaos. - The Christos Kapralos Museum with many paintings, sculptures, ceramics and works of forged lead and copper by the famous Greek artist; - The monastery and church of St. Nektarios, a significant religious pilgrimage site; - The famous pistachio groves of Aegina; pistachio trees have been cultivated in Aegina since 1860; - The picturesque villages of Perdika, Pahia Rahi etc. Culture and history image
